Nigerian’s are speaking up for a man who was charged with breaking the peace for naming his dog after President Muhammadu Buhari.
Joachim Chinakwe said he named is pet dog after the former military dictator because he was a fan of his. Chinakwe called Buhari his hero but in Africa many would find naming a dog after anyone insulting.
Chinakwe was arrested after taking his dog for a walk in a neighborhood with tag bearing the name where Mr Buhari enjoys popular support. The Nigerian police arrested the Buhari naming pet man after residents said the act is provocative.
He was charged with conduct “likely to cause a breach of the peace” in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria.
Nigerians took to social media, with one warning, “If we keep quiet when they arrest the man who named his dog Buhari, who will talk for us when they arrest us for criticizing the real Buhari?”
