The Gambia’s ruling APRC Party is to hold a 50,000 youth-led political rally in the provincial city of Basse, a senior party official said on Monday.
Mayor Yankuba Colley said a committee has been launched to plan, manage and coordinate the event, which is expected to cost taxpayers over a million dalasis in festivities.
Youths are expected to be transported from all of the country’s more than 50 voting constituencies to the event.
At least three main rallies are being planned by the APRC, which is facing fierce opposition in the polls in December.
Colley said serious business needs to be done ahead of the December polls after one of its expelled parliamentarians declared his candidacy for president, deeply dividing the party.
