North Bank Governor says windstorm kills one person, destroys homes

At least one person has died and about 48 homes destroyed after windstorms and heavy rains swept through the country’s North Bank Region, Governor Lamin Jammeh said.

The rains accompanied by strong winds killed Mr. Tala Jammeh after his small fishing boat capsized in the River Gambia. Jammeh, 52, has two wives and several children who are largely dependent on him.

Many people in Medina Sedia, Nbantankiling, Albreda, Juffureh, Sika and Sittanunku all in Upper Nuimi were displaced by the severe weather conditions that have caused havoc across the country especially in the West Coast and Upper River Regions.

The regional disaster management team in the North Bank said families whose properties were destroyed have slim chances of recovering.

The Governor advised for citizens to adhere to weather forecast reports and to take precautions. He has signed an emergency order for aid and for the disaster management committee to make assessments of the damages for planning and to make informed decisions.
