China to build international center in Gambia

The Chinese Ambassador to The Gambia said the Asian nation will be building an international conference center in The Gambia. It is the first bilateral cooperation between the two countries after a two decade diplomatic break.

Beijing said The Gambia has accepted the terms in an agreement signed by Foreign Minister Neneh Gaye.

China built The Gambia’s independence stadium in Bakau.

Chinese companies have also surveyed the Port of Banjul for a deep water seaport.

Ambassador Zhang Jiming, who presented his credence to Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy on Thursday said relations between Beijing and Banjul has grown stronger. The Gambia supported China during arbitration with Philippines over the South China Sea.

The Gambia severed relations with Taiwan in October 2013 and resumed relations with China in March.

China this week awarded 12 Gambian students with scholarships to study in universities in its country.
