The Gambia’s president, Yahya Jammeh has recalled Mr. Bala Garba Jahumpa from Foreign Service to serve as Minister of Works, Transportation and Infrastructure.
Mr. Jahumpa was designated as the country’s Ambassador to India in August and also the Secretary General of the ruling APRC party.
Jahumpa will replace Doudou Bammy Jagne, who was until this fall the Secretary-General and Head of Civil Service.
President Yahya Jammeh has been reshuffling his cabinet and some major changes were made.
His longtime loyalist and Interior Minister Ousman Sonko has been fired and replaced by an active member of the Gambia’s armed forces accused of a coup.
Jammeh has also appointed one of his longest-serving cabinet members as his Chief of Staff. Former education minister Fatou Lamin Faye is now Minister of Presidential and Legislative Affairs.
Jahumpa’s recall to the cabinet has been associated with the forthcoming presidential elections in which Mr. Jammeh is seeking a fifth mandate.
Jammeh is facing a deeply divided opposition which is struggling to finalize coalition talks ahead of the early November nomination deadlines. Without a coalition, Jammeh is predicted to win the polls.
AU pre-electoral mission visited Banjul this week and held talks with the country’s justice minister and members of the opposition party.
