15 youths arrested in Basse after soccer fight erupted

At least one police officer was injured in Basse after a fight broke out between the supporters of Gambiasara F.C. and Numuyel at what was supposed to be a ‘community friendly’ soccer final game, the police in the upper region said.

Police arrested about 15 people involved in the fight at the Basse Mini Stadium and some few other spectators sustained injuries.

The police said their officer, whose name has not been released sustained injuries to his head and has received medical attention.

No serious injuries were reported.

The local football association has cancelled all games and said they are also doing their own investigation.

“At the moment, we have suspended all football related activities in the area. Our intentions were to organize another tournament in the region but due to this fight we have reversed our decision,” said Alhagie Jallow, secretary general of the football association.

The regions Governor Omar Sompo Ceesay sponsored the tournament to foster unity and collaboration between the communities and his office said the fight defeats that purpose.
