Nine dead in automobile accident in coastal Gambia

At least nine people are confirmed dead and many wounded after the driver of a commercial truck transporting beach sand lost control ramming into a passenger van and some bystanders in Tujereng. Many of the dead were women who were petty traders in the city of Serrekunda.

The police have not made any statement and information on the truck driver has not been made available pending charges.

Friday morning’s rush hour accident will spike the number of reported traffic deaths within the Greater Kombo area to more than 30 just within the last 60 days.

Police attributed many accidents to over speeding. A similar accident this summer left at least nine people dead in Brufut.

At least two drivers are facing vehicular homicide charges in Brikama. The police said the drivers were over speeding, driving recklessly and being negligent killing at least two people.

An earlier version of this report put the dead count to 14. New information from The Gambia Police has put the deaths to nine, most of them bystanders awaiting passenger vans to Serrekunda.
