Gambian authorities refused to give entry to the Chairperson of ECOWAS and Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf after President Yahya Jammeh overturned last week’s elections results.
The denial has thrown sand into a potential political solution to a fast growing political crisis.
Jammeh, who had already conceded defeat is now calling for fresh elections after a shocking narrow loss. He has accused the country’s electoral chief of rigging the polls. Jammeh had last week called the polls free, fair and rig-proof.
ECOWAS Chair Johnson Sirleaf was hoping to put The Gambia’s first transition of power back on track.
The international community has already marked Jammeh’s administration as illegitimate, rejecting his statement.
Gambia’s president-elect’s transitional team held an emergency meeting yesterday evening after Jammeh’s announcement. President-elect Barrow urged Jammeh to accept the results.
