Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Geoffery Onyeama met with Senegal’s Macky Sall to discuss ‘‘a mediation for a return to constitutional order in the Gambia,’‘ as President Muhammadu Buhari starts to enforce an ECOWAS resolution adopted in Abuja.
The Gambia was thrown into a political crisis after President Yahya Jammeh refused to leave power and unconstitutionally annulled the election results.
Jammeh met with West African leaders twice in Banjul but accuse ECOWAS of being “blatant and one-sided.”
ECOWAS says it will use military force against Jammeh if he refuses to step down when his mandate expires next month.
President Yahya Jammeh is faced with strong international condemnation and local resistance for reversing his initial decision to concede defeat.
