Gambian authorities have arrested and charged eight supporters of the country’s former autocratic ruler, Yahya Jammeh, according to a senior opposition member.
Among those arrested and charged included a former supporter and local council member for the UDP, Ousman Rambo Jatta.
According to a criminal complaint seen by SMBC, Jatta with Isatou Jawara, Isatou Jatta, Ebrima Jatta, Babucarr Jatta, Kebba Jarju, Manyima Jatta, Ousainatou Jallow and Mammie Jatta unlawfully encroached the home of Ebrima Janko Jatta, intimidating him and his family and using profanity.
They were charged with criminal trespass, common assault and prohibition of conduct conducive to breach of peace.
At least two people, Momodou Jawara and Mustapha Jawara were allegedly assaulted by Jatta and his APRC supporters. A court has released them on a D5,000 dalasis ($125 dollars) bail.
Government and opposition supporters have clashed since the ouster of longtime ruler, Yahya Jammeh. Prosecutors have dropped charges against more than 26 opposition supporters this year in “an effort to foster reconciliation and peace.”
