At least 13 people were rushed to the Serrekunda General Hospital after they were involved in a commercial van wreck in Abuko along the Brikama Highway.
Most of the victims were seriously injured and had to be transported to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul.
Some of the victims were trapped in the crushed vehicle making it difficult for rescuers to pull them out.
“It was heading towards Brikama and the condition of the people is very serious. I do not know if some will survive,” said a witness.
“The driver is seriously injured and some people were trapped inside the car.”
The commercial vans in Gambia are often loaded with 14 passengers plying the TransGambia Highway linking Brikama to Serrekunda.
Speed is not being ruled out by the police, who later arrived at the scene of the incident.
No fatalities have so far been reported and the victims are said to be in stable conditions.
