Gambian authorities dragged man to court for raping teenage stepdaughter

Gibie Mboob has pleaded guilty to rape and sexual assault charges at the High Court in Banjul.

Information filed in court indicates that Mboob knowingly committed an act of sexual penetration with the victim, who is less than 13 years old.

The police arrested Mboob last month in Latrikunda Sabiji, in the outskirts of Serrekunda.

As part of their investigation, the Police Department is wanting to know if there are any others who were possibly victimized by Mboob.

He denied there are any other victims and blamed “saitan for the incident.”

Mboob said the victim is her stepdaughter. He married the woman after the victim’s father passed about a decade ago.

In The Gambia, it is illegal for an adult (age 18 or older) to have sex with a minor (under age 18) regardless of whether the sex was consensual.

The laws are premised on the assumption that a minor does not have the capability of giving informed consent to sex.

Gambia has strict penalties for rape and sex with minors, and if found guilty could be given 14 years to life.
