Former President Yahya Jammeh has paid millions to his aides, according to financial transactions unearthed by a commission probing the ex-leader.
According to the Central Bank Principal Accounting Officer, Jammeh paid more than $50,000 (at least D2 million dalasis) to Sanna Jarju and Ansumana Tamba.
Jarju was Mr. Jammeh’s Chief of Protocol and Tamba was his elite presidential guard chief. The records, which were confirmed by his former Chief of Staff Momodou Sabally, did not state why the payments were made.
The payments from Jammeh were also made from secret accounts with hundreds of millions stashed in commercial banks.
Dozens of people were paid through the accounts by Jammeh, who is found to have disregarded all government financial regulations during his 22-year rule.
Jammeh has swindled billions from the state and his assets frozen. Gambians are shocked at the depth at which the economy was mismanaged and the treasury ransacked.
