The death toll in the vehicle crash involving two members of parliament has increased to five, medical officials at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital confirmed.
At least two people died at the scene of the accident and 13 people were injured, two of them seriously, when one of the speeding vehicles somersaulted.
Officials say three more people succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital and two others remain in critical conditions.
The cause of the collision was not immediately clear but witnesses say the speeding vehicle of the Sanementereng MP Baba Galleh Jallow was trying to overtake that of Busumbala MP Saikouba Jarju when it lost control, hitting Jarju’s vehicle twice before drifting offroad.
The crash happened on the outskirts of the capital, Banjul, just a few meters from the Denton Bridge linking the island city to the country’s mainland.
Condolences poured out to people giving their thoughts and prayers to the families of the deceased who lost their lives in this tragic accident and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
