Gambia police arrest opposition supporter for incriminating Foreign Minister in political violence

The police in The Gambia have arrested an opposition supporter, Landing Manneh for distributing an audio recording accusing the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ousainou Darboe of being behind an attack on their convoy.

Manneh said Darboe is complicit in the clashes between opposition and government supporters, mainly from Darboe’s UDP party because he [Darboe] and his party failed to condemn the attack in the suburban village in the outskirts of the city of Brikama.

Manneh has been released on bail on Friday evening, according to opposition supporter Lamin Tamba. He is to report to the police. He was bailed by three Gambian sureties and a landed property in the Greater Banjul Area.

Opposition spokesperson and former Minister of Information, Seedy SK Njie was arrested but released after questioning by the police for demanding Manneh’s release on Friday.

Several supporters of the APRC have been arrested for using WhatsApp to disseminate information that is considered by authorities to be a threat to the peace.

At least a dozen soldiers, including two relatives of former President Yahya Jammeh, are being court-martialed for using WhatsApp to plot a coup against the government of Adama Barrow, just six months into his rule.
