Doctor ‘rapes’ patient in Gambia’s main hospital

A Gambian doctor has been arrested by the police for allegedly raping one of his patients at the country main teaching hospital, police sources confirmed.

The patient, a 24-year-old girl was reportedly assaulted by the doctor. The names of the victim and the doctor have been kept confidential by the authorities.

“There name of the doctor has not been released yet and I cannot say his name right now but investigations are on. What happened is unfortunate but hopefully after the investigation, the police PRO will give more details,” the source said.

The doctor is currently being held by the police at the serious crimes unit. He is helping detectives with the investigation.

The Gambia has strict penalties for rape – from a life sentence to death. Authorities also arrested a man from Bundung for attempted rape. Two men were arrested as well for the murder of a Senegalese-Ivorian and a young saloon worker.

Gambia’s Women’s Affairs Ministry last summer expressed concerns after an elementary school girl was raped and suffocated to death.
