A Gambian woman has died after a stray bullet hit her at a military training range outside the administrative city of Brikama, the military has confirmed in a statement.
Fatou Manneh, thought be about 42, went out the thick bushes barely a kilometer outside of her residence to get firewood, often used for cooking in The Gambia.
Authorities said the incident happened on Thursday but she died Saturday at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in the capital, Banjul.
“We found out about the incident after the exercise was over. We received a call and that she was rushed to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul,” said the military spokesperson, Major Lamin Sanyang.
Members of the Gambia’s security forces were on a firing exercise when Fatou got hit. An investigation has been opened. The army had issued warnings before the exercises for the public to stay away from the firing range.
It is not the first such incident in the country. A child died about a decade ago in the same neighborhood after a grenade he collected with the firewoods exploded.
Senior security officials have visited Ms. Manneh’s family to pay their respect and assure them that the incident will be probed and furnished with details of their findings.
