Police in Central River haunt suspected rapist

The police in the Central River Region have launched a manhunt to capture a man suspected of raping a teenage girl in the city of Bansang

The man, whose details have not been fully released to the press was first apprehended by a group of youths but an appeal by a local resident made them release him.

Since then, authorities in Basang’s Fulladu district have been on the scout for the suspect but did not say if, Abdoulie Baldeh, the man that pleaded for the youths to release the suspect would face any charges.

Baldeh was arrested and questioned by the police. He was released and has joined the police in searching for the suspect. Authorities said he could be remanded if the suspect is not captured.

In fewer than six months, the police arrested a man from Bundung for attempted rape, two men were arrested as well for the murder of a Senegalese-Ivorian and a young saloon worker and a medical doctor for raping his patient.

Authorities since last year have expressed concerns about the increase in rape. The country strict penalties for rape – from life sentence to death penalty.
